Children and Young People Receiving Elective Home Education
The primary duty to educate a child rests with parents, and parents have the legal right to educate their child at home. Parents may choose to exercise this right for a variety of reasons. If you choose to do this and your child is already a registered pupil, then you must notify your child’s school in writing that you wish to withdraw them from the school roll. The school must tell Ceredigion’s Education Department within two weeks that you have elected to home educate your child.
If your child has not been enrolled in a school, it would be most helpful if you would make an initial contact with the LA so that we are able to fulfil our obligations towards your child. The child must continue to receive education until the last Friday in June in the school year in which they reach age 16.
What is Elective Home Education?
Elective Home Education is where a parent elects to take personal responsibility for their child’s educational provision, including both planning and delivering an educational programme.
All prospective home educating families need to be fully aware of their role and the LA’s role. Ceredigion LA is keen to support you and ensure that you make an informed decision about your child’s education.
