Ceredigion Youth Service’s Outreach Team shortlisted for Award

Ceredigion County Council’s Youth Service’s Outreach Team has been shortlisted for the Welsh Government’s Youth Work Excellence Awards in the category ‘Promoting Employability skills.’

Rebecca Champ and Gwenllian Evans

The Youth Work Excellence Awards is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate outstanding youth work projects and youth workers from across Wales. Rebecca Champ and Gwenllian Evans have been nominated by the Youth Service for their contribution in providing personal and social development opportunities for young people aged 16-25.

Rebecca and Gwenllian are part of the council’s Youth Service team and have delivered over 50 workshops to over 300 young people during the last year. The subjects of these workshops range from wellbeing, to upskilling and employability. 35% of these young people have gone on to achieve nationally recognised accreditations and have re-engaged in mainstream activities, training or employment.

The outreach team receives an annual Youth Work grant from the Welsh Government to promote both universal and targeted youth work provision across the county. The team aims to engage with young people who are, or at risk of, becoming ‘NEET’s’ (Not in Education Employment or Training).

Elen James, Ceredigion County Council’s Head of Youth Engagement and Continuing Education said: “Rebecca and Gwenllian have worked so hard over the last year and have really made a difference to so many young people’s lives. We are very proud of what they have accomplished and are honoured to have them as part of our team. We truly hope that they’ll win their category in Cardiff.”

The team have organised other outreach projects over the past year offering educational and preventative programmes. These projects have involved strong partnership work with organisations such as Job Centre Plus, Careers Wales, Coleg Ceredigion, Ceredigion Training, Aberystwyth University, Dyfed-Powys Police, Hywel Dda University Health Board and many other statutory and voluntary organisations.

Categories in the Youth Work Excellence Awards range from recognising outstanding projects to recognising outstanding individuals. The Youth Excellence Awards evening will take place on Friday, 23 June 2017 at the Hilton Hotel in Cardiff.
